Why a floor plan beats a capacity figure
"A 10x10 holds a two-bedroom apartment" is true and almost useless when you are standing in your living room wondering about the sectional. Volume tells you whether things fit in principle. A floor plan tells you whether they fit in the shape you actually have.
Two constraints only show up visually. The first is width: a 7 ft sofa cannot turn inside a 5 ft wide unit no matter how much volume is left. The second is access: the difference between a full fill and a center aisle looks abstract as a percentage and obvious as a drawing.

Percentages are of the unit's usable volume at moderate packing density, not of its gross volume. Every cubic-foot figure here is computed from the same size data the plan above is drawn from.
Worked example: a two-bedroom in a 10x10
Load the 95-item catalog with a two-bedroom apartment — queen bed set, sofa, double dresser, dining table and four chairs, bookcase, washer, dryer and about thirty boxes — and place it in a /storage-unit-sizes/10x10/.
The floor fills before the volume does. Furniture footprints take most of the 100 sq ft while the stack is still under head height, which is why the readout separates floor used from volume used: at that point you are not out of space, you are out of floor, and the remaining capacity is only reachable by stacking upward.
Switch the layout to a center aisle and the same inventory needs 578 cu ft to fit rather than 680 cu ft. That single control is usually the difference between a plan that works and one that needs the next size — check it against the work out the size you need before you rent.
Unit footprints at a glance
All four drawn at the same scale. The jump people underestimate most is 5x10 to 10x10 — it doubles both floor area and volume, and it is the step where a studio unit becomes an apartment unit.
Item footprints placed on the plan come from the published furniture dimension dataset, so what the drawing shows and what the calculators total are the same values.
Limitations of the visualizer
The plan is a two-dimensional footprint. Real storage is three-dimensional and you stack, which is why the readout reports volume used alongside floor used — the two diverge quickly once boxes go in.
It also cannot know your unit's exact interior dimensions or door opening. Advertised sizes are nominal. Measure both before you rent: what to measure and how.

Compare three things: total volume against the unit's usable volume, your widest item against the door opening, and your longest item against the unit width. The first is what this visualizer shows; the other two need a tape measure.
Does the visualizer account for stacking?
The floor plan shows footprint; the readout shows volume, which assumes realistic stacking at the chosen packing density. Boxes stack well, upholstered furniture does not, and the figures reflect that.
